June, the perfect month for Ylang Ylang

When I think of June, I think of sunshine, heat and flowers out in bloom. Ylang Ylang is my essential oil for June with its intense, floral power! And definitely an oil I use in aromatherapy massage.

This tall evergreen tree flowers all year round and produces yellow, pink and mauve flowers.

Native to Indonesia, the main producer of this oil today is from Madagascar.

The essential oil is a yellow, mobile liquid. It’s a middle note, so will hang around in a blend. It is also non-toxic and non-irritant however, sensitization reactions can occur. This means that if you use a lot of this oil, very often, you skin can develop a reaction to it. However ylang ylang is such a strong oil that it is probably less likely to be over used.

What do I use this oil for in Aromatherapy?

It is an excellent oil for the skin and scalp.  If one is suffering from oily skin, acne, dandruff or seborrhea it can be useful, as it is anti-sebhorrhoic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Ylang ylang is also very good for hypertension, palpitations and tachycardia as it is hypotensive and sedative.  I have had success with treating a client of mine who suffered heart palpitations. She reported a noticeable decrease in the 6th week of massage with this wonderful oil the main oil of a blend. Staying with this, it is also great for poor circulation as it is a circulatory stimulant. These qualities afore mentioned also help muscular aches and pains.

Last but most certainly not least, it has a powerful affect on the mind and emotions. Depression, stress, insomnia, anger, fear, frustration all can be eased with ylang ylang essential oil for it is anti-depressant, sedative, calming and euphoric.

What other oils would I blend with Ylang Ylang?

Definitely woody oils, spicy oils, citrus oils, geranium, palmarosa, jasmine, benzoin, juniper berry and tea tree. Yes, being a strong oil, it can blend with the bigger heavier scents around 🙂
